The ACT Bar Association, Women Lawyers Association ACT, and the Asian Australian Lawyers Association ACT are pleased to welcome members and friends to join our inaugural Come to the Bar Workshop at the Australian National University Moot Court on Saturday, 19 November 2022 from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

Our Come to the Bar event this year will be in the form of a half-day workshop, including the following sessions:

  • Opening remarks from Justice Loukas-Karlsson
  • Why have a career at the Bar
  • Why the Bar needs diversity
  • How to prepare for the Bar Exam and Bar Readers Practice Course
  • Mental health as a barrister
  • Preparing for practice at the Bar, including
    • Building networks
    • Finances
    • Getting a tutor
    • Securing chambers
    • Understanding barrister skills in action, including a mock court session with commentary on advocacy skills
  • Q&A

Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with numerous barristers from different practice areas about what to expect from a career at the Bar, and watch them unpack and explain their skills in action.

The workshop would be of interest even if you are unsure whether a career at the Bar is for you, or if you are just curious to see what a career at the Bar involves or to gain a better understanding of barrister skills such as advocacy.

This event is free for WLA ACT and AALA ACT members, and $20 for non‑members.  Morning tea and refreshments will be provided.

We also note that photos will be taken at the event for our social media and website. If you do not want your photo taken, please notify our photographer.

Attendees will be eligible to claim CPD points in Core Area 2 (Practice management and business skills), Core Area 3 (Professional skills) and Core Area 4 (Substantive and procedural law).

This event is jointly presented by the Women Lawyers Association ACT, the ACT Bar Association and the Asian Australian Lawyers Association ACT.
