About the Scholarship

The William Ah Ket Scholarship – named after Australia’s first barrister of Chinese background – seeks to encourage persons at early stages of their legal careers to contribute to the discourse on diversity and inclusion in the law and legal profession.

The winner of the Scholarship will receive $6,000. A further $1,000 prize will be given to two shortlisted entrants.

The Scholarship is an initiative by the AALA and is in its sixth year. It is designed to recognise the historical contribution of William Ah Ket to the legal profession as the first Asian Australian barrister in Australia.

The Scholarship is also supported by law firm Maddocks, as founding sponsor, and the University of Melbourne Law School and the Victorian Bar, as supporting partners.

Papers and the Application Forms for this year’s Scholarship are due by 5 pm AEST Monday 21st August 2023.
